Nardoa novaecaledoniae. This starfish grows to 20cm and is found in the shallow backreef lagoon. It feeds on detritus and microalgae and is an important scavenger in the reef ecosystem.
In super high definition you can see the hundreds of individual images when you get up close. Just like on the reef - the closer you look, the more you see. This one was from Lizard Island - one of the most spectacular places on the planet to explore the underwater world of coral reefs, which is why the Australian Museum runs the Lizard Island Research Station.
